Bristol's Shortstuff has come wobbling into sight like a huge dub jelly, engulfing the scene with his intense brand of deep dubstep. Having just put the together the very first Super Super mixtape, we caught up with him to have a quick chat about his tunes, live japes and the hottest dubplates, like, this century. Fast forward..!

Calling you Shortstuff makes me feel like I'm taunting a young kid. How did the name arise?
Put it this way: I'm not as tall as Brackles. It's ok though, cause he reaches stuff down from shelves for me and I do up his shoelaces. I’m not especially short, but I think I thought it was a clever idea when I was 18.

Along with Untold, Appleblim, Brackles and Mount Kimbie you seem to be pulling the weight for a new wave of pretty exciting wobble and dubstep. How did you arrive at such an intense sound?
I don't know how it happened to be honest. I listened to a lot of punk and hardcore growing up, so I've always had it in me to make noisy, brash music. But I think it's just a combination of lots of different strands of music that have resulted in what I'm making at the moment

Apart from the string of quite astounding tracks that grace your mix, what's tickling your dub-fancy at the minute?
Everything Untold sends me blows my mind. Also killing it at the moment is Bok Bok; the Bubbz remix of his I put on the mix has had me and Bracky [Brackles] in a bit of a state, for the past few days.

Blunted Robots is looking like an interesting project, although I can't quite figure out whether it's a label, club night or both! Fancy having a good sound off about it?
It’s mine and Brackles’ label, but we’re hosting room 3 at Fabric with Berkane Sol on 9th October, so that might be where you got confused. We have lots of plans for it. The next 12” is all Martin Kemp, released in November.

You seem to be getting around the clubs a bit more lately. Want to indulge us with any nightmares and mishaps?
Don’t be silly.

Were your hardcore bands really that bad?
Yes. We once had a singer who never wrote a word down and just improvised, using stuff that he saw around him.

Can we expect some more Shortstuff material to land soon?
I’ve got another 12” and then an EP coming on Ramp before the end of the year. Then me and Geiom have a 12” coming on Planet Mu, and there are a few other really exciting bits I have to keep secret for now.

Finally, any more artists that you'd like to tip your cap to?
Those two I just mentioned deserve a big cap-tipping. Roska is also constantly sick, and he's a Spurs fan, which is nice.
